
Nannette Bowler currently serves as Director of the Fairfax County Department of Family Services. She directs the operation of this major county department, which includes over 1,700 employees and a budget of more than $211 million, including five divisions: Children, Youth and Families (CYF); Adult and Aging; Self-Sufficiency; the Office for Women/Domestic and Sexual Violence Services; and a variety of programs operated from the Office for Children. Previously, Nannette was Chief Judge of the Family Division for the 8th Judicial Circuit, Ionia County, Michigan, presiding over cases including guardianships of incapacitated and developmentally disabled individuals; mental incompetency hearings; child abuse and neglect cases; juvenile delinquency cases; and adoptions. As Director of the Michigan Family Independence Agency and Cabinet Member to the Governor, Nannette directed 22 programs, including child welfare, juvenile delinquency, and adult protective service; overseeing 10,500 employees, a 4 billion dollar budget, and over 44 streams of federal and state funding. She previously served as Executive Director of the Chance at Childhood: Law and Social Work Initiative at Michigan State University which was created to jointly train master-level social workers and law students in child advocacy. She was appointed as Legal Counsel/Executive Director of the Michigan Lieutenant Governor's Commission on Children, which culminated in the passage of 21 bills in the Michigan house and senate involving all aspects of child welfare. Other positions held include Co-Founder/Executive Director of a non-profit organization called the Children's Law Center, and Assistant Prosecutor. Awards received include: Foundation for Improvement of Justice, Inc.'s national award in 1993 for innovative and dedicated work in advancing justice for children and families; and the National Leadership Award in 2003, awarded by the Institute for Educational Leadership in appreciation of effective contributions to the improvement of American education.
